the misery caused by hurricane sandy. >> it's thursday, december 13th. and "starting point" begins right now. >>> good morning, welcome, everybody. our starting point this morning is a look inside the mind of a 22-year-old sandwich shop clerk who went on a shooting rampage at a suburban portland shopping mall. here is what we know about the young man. his name is jacob tyler roberts. friends say he was usually upbeat, sweet even. suddenly quit his job last week. his ex-girlfriend said he announced he was going to move to hawaii. he never followed through on that. instead police say he put a hockey mask on and headed toward the clackamas town center mall on tuesday afternoon. ended up killing a dedicated hospice nurse and respected former radio executive. critically wounded a 15-year-old girl before he finally committed suicide. it all brings us right to dan simon. he's live from suburban portland this morning. what else do we know about jacob roberts? >> reporter: well, good morning, soledad. his name surfaced less than 24 hours ago so it's still a bit early in the investigation. but the thi

petallides. lori: after october retail sales numbers were distorted by the impact of hurricane sandy november sales bounced back to adjusted 0.3% gain. will we see december sales rise even more? we have a retail analyst with us. dorothy. thanks for coming in. >> thanks for having me. lori: the impact of hurricane sandy what do you think? >> there was impact during the month of november. people were without power in the new york area more than the final week of october. between that and i think carryover for the entire holiday season it is stuff in the northeast from that perspective. lori: absolutely but the follow-up what about money spent on rebuilding effort, extra gas? >> right. there's that positive aspect to it as well. lori: how does it off set? how does it net out? >> i think in terms of christmas shopping, for example, the numbers so far look pretty good. the traffic to us looks pretty good we see in the malls even during this period when normally there is quite a lull going on after the frenzy of black friday. lori: pretty good is a good way to characterize it, even though sales ros

their humvees and heavy trucks to transport delawareans with medical emergencies. when superstorm sandy struck just last month, 120 soldiers from delaware traveled with heavy equipment to assist in recovery efforts in new york and new jersey. when hurricane katrina devastated new orleans in 2005, two of our c-130 aircraft left from new castle airport the next day, carrying the first of what would be 400 troops from delaware who assisted with gulf coast recovery. the national guard is resourceful, ready to serve and they go everywhere they're called. these are truly citizen soldiers. when i was the county executive of new castle county, delaware, we had as many as seven different county employees at different times deployed overseas, many of them police officers, called up for their national guard service, folks who are the epitome of serving at home and serving abroad. so it's with a very personal sense of the needs and the challenges when i thank those employers who recognize that even when they are not at their desks, even when they are not contributing to their employer, our national guard
